Fatal crash in Kailua-Kona claims life of pedestrian

KAILUA KONA, Hawaii (KHON2) -- A man is dead after a crash in Kailua-Kona. Hawaii police said on Saturday, May 30, a truck was heading south on the Old Kona Airport roadway when it veered off the road onto the unfinished gravel area. According to police, the truck hit a male pedestrian who was walking on the runway. He was taken to the hospital before being transferred to Oahu for further treatment. On Thursday, June, 4, the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The 23-year-old truck driver was arrested and charged with reckless driving, negligent injury in the first degree and operating a vehicle under the influence. Police said he posted $13,000 bail. He now faces negligent homicide charges. At this time, police believe that speed, alcohol and inattention were factors in the crash. This death marks the 16th traffic fatality on Hawai‘i Island roads in 2026, compared to 13 traffic fatalities at the same time last year.
