FAA reports 7 fatalities and 1 survivor in Bangor, Maine jet crash

A business jet crashed during takeoff at Bangor International Airport in Maine Sunday night, killing at least six people. The aircraft, a Bombardier Challenger 600, flipped over and caught fire as a winter storm approached the area, reducing visibility. The FAA initially reported seven fatalities, but later revised the number as preliminary. The airport confirmed that there were six passengers on board, all of whom perished. Although snow was falling heavily elsewhere, it had just begun in Bangor at the time of the crash, and other planes had been taking off safely. The jet had been requesting deicing before departure, as the model has a history of crashes caused by ice on the wings. Investigators from the FAA and NTSB will be examining the wreckage, and a preliminary report is expected to be released in about a month. The identity of the individuals on board has not been disclosed publicly. The airport, which prides itself on being prepared for various weather conditions, shut down temporarily following the incident.
