Driver killed in March Air Reserve Base crash found with gunshot wound

An investigation is underway after a driver who was pronounced dead following a crash at March Air Reserve Base was found to have a gunshot wound Tuesday morning, authorities said. Deputies responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the area of 2nd Street and Z Street around 8:15 a.m., according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. A California Highway Patrol officer at the scene told deputies that one of their officers had responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection, where both drivers were transported to a local hospital in critical condition. One of the drivers was later pronounced dead, and it was subsequently determined that the person had suffered a gunshot wound, the Sheriff’s Department said. According to the CHP traffic incident log, the initial collision was reported around 6:45 a.m. The log stated that an unresponsive person with a weapon, possibly military or police, was found unresponsive in one of the vehicles. It was unclear if that was the person later pronounced dead, and no further details about their identity have been released. It was also unclear what caused the crash or when the driver was shot. The Moreno Valley Station’s Investigation Bureau has assumed the investigation. Check back for updates on this developing story.
