Driver accused in Knox County accident causing two fatalities
A suspect named Jose Roberto Rivera Recarte, 39, has been charged with various offenses related to a fatal crash on Maynardville Highway, where two individuals lost their lives. The charges against Recarte include two counts of vehicular homicide caused by driving under the influence, driving without a license, and eluding arrest after the incident. It all started when the Union County Sheriff's Office received a tip about a man leaving a bar appearing too impaired to drive. Despite an offer of a ride, Recarte declined and drove towards Knox County. Authorities chased and stopped him on Maynardville Highway, but he escaped, causing a collision with two vehicles. Recarte displayed signs of intoxication such as bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. He initially claimed to have had one drink but later denied consuming any alcohol. Recarte faced arrest after failing sobriety tests and later acted aggressively towards medical and law enforcement personnel. He lacked a driver's license, insurance, and identified himself with a Honduran passport. As per Knox County records, he is detained for immigration authorities.
