Ayden man faces death by vehicle charge after fatal crash

AYDEN, N.C. — A 33-year-old Ayden man is facing multiple charges after a crash that investigators say resulted in another person's death. According to arrest records, Jamie Santiago, 33, was arrested July 3 by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and charged with: Misdemeanor death by vehicle No operator's license Reckless driving to endanger Charging documents allege Santiago unintentionally caused the fatal crash while committing a traffic violation. According to the documents, Santiago told investigators he did not stop at a stop sign before entering the intersection. A witness also provided a written statement alleging Santiago was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at the stop sign. Investigators say those actions were the proximate cause of the fatal crash. Court records also show Santiago did not have a North Carolina driver's license and had never been issued one. Santiago was booked in the Pitt County Jail under a $100,000 secured bond. Bond records state the secured bond was ordered to ensure Santiago's appearance in court, citing him as a flight risk. The records also indicate Santiago has previously been deported three times.
