DPS: Man accused of causing deadly wrong-way crash on I-40 did not have legal immigration status

The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety commissioner says the man who caused a wrong-way crash that killed four people last week on I-40 in Canadian County did not have legal status in the U.S. Early Friday morning, a driver was heading in the wrong direction of I-40 near Czech Hall Road in Canadian County and crashed head-on into another vehicle, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. The impact of the collision was so hard that it caused the other vehicle to catch fire. All four were between 18 and 20 years old. He was booked into the Canadian County Jail on Sunday, and he faces several charges, including second-degree murder and driving under the influence.Investigators also said they found empty alcohol bottles inside the suspect's car. KOCO 5 has chosen not to release the suspect's name because formal charges have not been filed. Oklahoma Department of Public Safety Commissioner Tim Tipton said the state is working with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials on the case after claiming the suspect did not have legal immigration status in the U.S. Tipton said the suspect was granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status in 2015 and was given a work authorization permit. Tipton added that the suspect did not have a prior criminal record.
