Dog rescued after being thrown from car during rollover crash in Vermilion

VERMILION, Ohio (WJW) – The owner of a missing dog confirmed she was found on Tuesday and was being checked out for injuries at a local vet. The dog, named Sugar, had been missing since Monday afternoon when her owner was involved in a rollover crash in Vermilion near German’s Villa along Liberty Avenue. Video shared with FOX 8 showed the rollover crash, which police said was caused by texting and driving, and then Sugar running away from the car. Chief Scott Holmes told FOX 8 the dog made it all the way to Lake Erie and was rescued just over 24 hours after the crash. He said it’s a happy ending. Holmes also told FOX 8 that the crash is a reminder for everyone about the importance of Ohio’s law that prohibits texting and driving. “It was a very severe crash and it could’ve been very severe injuries, if not a fatal crash. Luckily, the driver was being smart and wearing her seatbelt. That probably saved her life, in my opinion,” Holmes said. “The video itself speaks volumes to the dangers of texting and driving… I’m glad that the driver is okay. She suffered some scrapes and some bruising, but it could’ve been a lot worse.” Holmes said the driver was cited for failure to control and for texting while driving.
