Dirt bike rider killed in collision with Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus in Homewood, authorities say
A dirt bike rider was killed Saturday evening after colliding with a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus in Pittsburgh's Homewood neighborhood, authorities said. The crash occurred at approximately 5:55 p.m. at the intersection of Brushton and Frankstown avenues.According to preliminary information, an 86-Liberty bus was traveling through the intersection when it was involved in a collision with a dirt bike. EMS personnel pronounced the dirt bike operator dead at the scene. On Sunday morning, the Allegheny County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 33-year-old Deshawn Davis of Pittsburgh. "He was riding his bike, and the bus was like, already crossing the road, and [the rider] just went straight into it," said 12-year-old Chandler Thomas, who saw the crash unfold from the front seat of his mom's food truck, "Momma-licious," a half block away. "I was just in shock. I was speechless."For his mother, Tracy Hall, disbelief just begins to describe it. "Just standing there watching his body not move, my heart just broke," Hall said. "It's a tragedy, I pray to God; God comfort this family."The victim lay under a sheet for hours on the street next to a green dirt bike."I didn't know what to think, I didn't know what to do at the time. I mean, like I'm really, really [having] a hard time right now," Thomas said. So, too, he said, was his mother."I don't think I'll ever be the same, because I've never seen a dead body before," Hall said. She told KDKA-TV that she wants to instill in her son the importance of always being careful when riding bikes. It was not known if anyone aboard the bus was injured in the crash. Officials also told KDKA-TV that city cameras did capture footage of the incident. No additional details about the circumstances of the crash were immediately available as of Saturday evening. The incident remains under investigation by Pittsburgh Regional Transit police.
