Decrease in Utah Wrong-Way Crashes
Despite recent tragic incidents, the Utah Department of Public Safety has noted a decrease in the number of wrong-way driving crashes on Utah roads compared to the past five years. According to the department, there have been a total of five wrong-way driving fatalities as of Monday, which matches the number from 2024. Additionally, there have been 15 wrong-way crashes in 2025, a reduction from 24 in the previous year. Sgt. Mike Alexander of the Utah Highway Patrol emphasized the severity of wrong-way crash calls and highlighted that impaired driving is a common factor in these incidents. The Utah Department of Transportation has systems to detect wrong-way drivers on 27 ramps across the state, and since their installation in 2023, they have identified 216 wrong-way drivers. John Gleason, a spokesperson for UDOT, noted that while wrong-way crashes do not make up a large portion of overall crashes, they have significant impacts due to the high speeds involved. It is important to remember that behind each statistic is a person, as Sgt. Mike Alexander emphasized the human element in responding to these incidents.
