Deadly crash blocks all lanes on I-5 southbound near airport

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A fatal two-vehicle crash prompted a temporary shutdown on southbound Interstate 5 near downtown San Diego early Friday morning. According to Caltrans, all southbound lanes of I-5 north of Sassafras Street were blocked around 3:30 a.m. while police responded to a traffic incident. Authorities confirmed that two vehicles were involved in the collision and one person was killed as a result of the crash. Their identity has not been released at this time. Traffic was diverted at Washington Street while the Kettner Boulevard on-ramp was also temporarily closed, Caltrans noted in an update shortly after 4 a.m. Roughly 30 minutes later, officials reopened the two left lanes of the freeway while keeping the three right lanes closed as investigators remained at the scene. The closure caused a backup in traffic. Caltrans later confirmed that all lanes have since reopened. Additional details about the circumstances leading up to the crash have not yet been released.
