DA: Repeat DUI offender sentenced for deadly Lemoore crash from 2019
FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A 60-year-old man was sentenced Thursday for a DUI that killed an Uber driver in a fiery crash in Lemoore in 2019, the district attorney's office said. Marvin Vance Reese Sr. was found guilty of second-degree murder following a jury trial on Dec. 9, 2025. On June 29, 2019, it was reported that Reese was driving a Hummer H2 southbound on Highway 41 at a high rate of speed. The DA said that he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Hyundai Elantra driven by Derek Balderas of Fresno. Balderas was working as an Uber driver and was returning home after dropping off a passenger in Lemoore. Following the crash, Balderas' Hyundai became engulfed in flames, which ended up killing him. The DA said that Reese was driving under the influence and had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.13%. According to the DA, Reese has five prior DUI convictions: one in 1994, two in 2006, one in 2011, and one in 2013. In addition to his DUI history, the DA said that he has four prior "strike" convictions, including two robberies, a residential burglary, and criminal threats. In total, he has had 18 criminal convictions in California. He was sentenced to five years plus 45 years to life in state prison.
