Cyclist identified in deadly Lake Worth Beach train collision; new details released
Investigators have identified the 38-year-old cyclist killed in Friday’s Tri-Rail crash as new details emerge about what led up to the collision. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office , the crash happened around 7:47 a.m. along the 3000 block of Lake Worth Road, near the Lake Worth Beach station . Investigators reported that Ulisses Ricardo Aponte of Coconut Creek was riding a bicycle westbound toward the tracks while a northbound train was departing the station. However, as soon as the back end of the northbound train cleared the road, Aponte quickly rode across the tracks and into the path of a southbound train entering the terminal. The front of the incoming southbound train struck Aponte, knocking him beneath the train. He suffered severe injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The train's engineer and all aboard were uninjured. Deputies confirmed that next of kin have been notified.
