A multi-vehicle crash has slowed traffic on a stretch of Interstate 81 South in Luzerne County, causing traffic to back up for miles Friday morning. According to 511PA, the crash occurred on I-81 South between Exit 165 for Route 309 South toward Mountain Top/Wilkes-Barre and Exit 164 for Route 29 toward Nanticoke. The southbound lanes began experiencing delays at 9:51 a.m. PennDOT estimates the situation won't be resolved until approximately 1 p.m., though that time could change depending on the investigation and cleanup. Traffic cameras showed a lengthy backup stretching for several miles, with tractor-trailers and passenger vehicles at a standstill approaching the closure. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes until the highway reopens. Authorities have not yet released information about injuries or what led to the crash.
