Crash leads to police shooting in North Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- North Las Vegas police are investigating a deadly police shooting involving an armed man following a two-vehicle crash at an intersection. The incident occurred on Wednesday shortly after 4:33 p.m. along Gowan Road and 5th Street. The man involved in the crash was described as acting in a threatening manner and reportedly armed with a sharp object, according to police. When officers arrived at the scene, the man was seen on the roof of a car "acting erratically," police said. Officers attempted to get the suspect to comply with their commands, but he did not. The officers asked the suspect to drop the sharp object and get down from the vehicle. The man then jumped off the vehicle and ran toward an officer while revealing the sharp object in his hand, police said. Officers then fired their guns, hitting the man and knocking him to the ground, police said. The man was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. An officer had minor injuries following the incident. This is the first officer-involved shooting involving the North Las Vegas Police Department in 2026. Per NLVPD policy, the identity of the officer(s) involved will be released after 72 hours.  The crash blocked all lanes of traffic at a North Las Vegas intersection, according to the RTC of Southern Nevada. Drivers should avoid the area. Road closures are expected in the area of North 5th Street and East Gowan Road as police continue to investigate the scene.
