Crash closes lanes on Washington Rd. near Mullins Crossing
COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) - One person has died after a crash on Washington Road in Columbia County. Crews responded Wednesday to the scene of the fatal crash at the intersection of Washington Road and Throughbred Lane in Evans, near the Mullins Crossing shopping center. During clean up and investigation, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office shut down one eastbound lane and one westbound lane of Washington Road due to oil and gas leaking from one of the vehicles. Investigators tell us a Nissan Versa was traveling west on Washington Road when it crossed into eastbound lanes, causing a GMC Yukon to swerve. The Nissan reportedly struck the Yukon, before continuing the wrong way down the eastbound lane, striking a Chevy 2500 head on. The Columbia County Coroner has identified the driver as 84-year-old Vernon Lewis. Crews attempted life saving measures on Lewis but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
