Coroner releases name of Upstate woman who died in crash behind school
A 74-year-old woman died and another person was critically injured when a vehicle crashed into a dry retention pond behind a school in Simpsonville, South Carolina, on Tuesday afternoon. The Greenville County Coroner's Office said the crash happened around 3:43 p.m. in the area of 1830 West Georgia Road, behind Brashier Middle College.The South Carolina Highway Patrol said two vehicles were in the school's parking lot when one of them, an SUV, accelerated and sideswiped the other vehicle.Troopers said the SUV continued into a grass field, through a chain-link fence before driving into a dry retention pond and striking an embankment.Troopers said the driver of that SUV died at the scene, and a passenger was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital.The driver has been identified as Deborah McClain Hice, of Simpsonville. Her cause and manner of death are pending.
