Charter bus driver accused of speeding in Maryland months before fatal crash in Virginia
The same charter bus driver charged in a fatal crash on Interstate 95 in Virginia also faced charges for reckless driving in Maryland.Jin Sheng Dong, 48, of New York, was charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with a bus crash last week in Virginia that left five people dead.Dong was scheduled to appear this week in a Maryland court for an arrest on March 9 in Anne Arundel County. Maryland State Police said a trooper stopped Dong at 1:20 a.m. on Maryland Route 3 at Charles Hall Road. State police said Dong was driving a charter bus at 72 mph in a 50 mph zone with passengers on board.Authorities investigating Friday's crash on I-95 in Quantico said speed may have been a factor. Traffic was slowing for a construction zone, but the charter bus didn't slow down and struck multiple cars, officials said.On Monday, the National Transportation Safety Board provided an update on its investigation."It seems fairly clear that if there was any braking, there wasn't much because of the speed and the severity of the collision, but (it's) too early to know exactly what was happening on board the vehicle," said Tom Chapman, with the NTSB.There were no fatalities among the 34 passengers on board the bus at the time of the crash.The Virginia commonwealth's attorney said Dong will be held without bond upon his release from the hospital.
