Candlelight vigil held for Poway hit-and-run victim

FOX 5/KUSI — A candlelight vigil was held early Sunday night for the victim of a fatal hit-and-run crash that happened near Poway on Saturday night. California Highway Patrol said that a traffic collision between two vehicles occurred at the intersection of State Route 67 and Scripps Poway Parkway at about 11:25 p.m. Officials said one of the cars, a Honda Civic, was traveling northbound on SR-67 when the driver entered the intersection to make a left turn onto Scripps Poway Parkway westbound. At the same time, a Chevrolet Tahoe traveling southbound on SR-67 entered the intersection, and the two vehicles crashed. One of the passengers in the Honda Civic did not survive and was pronounced dead by medical personnel. The victim has been identified by family members as Sherilynne Hammer. Hammer's aunt said that she was an only child and that her family is devastated by the loss. The aunt said that at the time of the accident, Hammer's boyfriend, her brother and her brother's pregnant girlfriend were also in the car. Following the crash, the woman, who is seven months pregnant, underwent an emergency C-section. Family members gathered at a candlelight vigil at 6:30 p.m. near the crash site to honor Hammer. Her family said that they plan on hosting a fundraiser next Saturday at Mira Mesa Lanes at 6 p.m. to raise funds to give her a proper burial. A fundraiser has also been started on GoFundMe to help cover funeral and memorial expenses. More than $3,400 has been raised so far. According to the California Highway Patrol, a person has been arrested in relation to the incident. It has not yet been confirmed if that person was the driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe that allegedly fled the scene.
