BREAKING: Cardinal Drive reopens 6 1/2 hours after fiery, fatal crash
One person is dead after a dump overturned and caught fire on Cardinal Drive north of Fannett Road, shutting down the northbound lanes for more than 6 hours. The call came in at about one this afternoon reporting the crash in a construction area on the highway, in front of Angel's Scrap Metal in the 4700 block of Cardinal Drive. Beaumont police say the dump truck driver was traveling north in the inside lane and collided with the median concrete barrier. It is believed the driver then lost control of the dump truck and swerved to the outside lane and collided with a second concrete barrier, causing the dump truck to flip over. It then caught on fire. Next of kin has not been notified and the identity of the driver will be released at a later time. Police shut down the northbound lanes to allow first responders to work the crash. The highway reopened at 7:30, about 6 1/2 hours after the crash.
