Berwyn man charged in deadly Tri-State Tollway crash that killed maintenance worker
DES PLAINES, Ill. (WGN) — Illinois State Police on Wednesday announced the arrest of a suburban man for his alleged involvement in a deadly crash that claimed the life of an Illinois tollway maintenance worker. ISP troopers arrested 37-year-old Paul R. Ong of Berwyn following the May 30 collision. According to ISP, the crash unfolded just before 4:30 a.m. along the southbound lanes of I-294, near milepost 41.5 in Des Plaines. Three tollway maintenance workers were conducting pothole repairs when they were struck by an SUV allegedly driven by Ong. All three were hospitalized. Paramedics evaluated two workers for non-life-threatening injuries. One of the employees, identified as 52-year-old Calvin Holley, later died due to his injuries. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker would later react to the news, lamenting the state worker's passing as "heartbreaking." The Cook County State's Attorney's Office on Tuesday approved one count of aggravated driving under the influence involving death, a Class 2 felony. Ong remains jailed pending an undisclosed court hearing date.
