Baby critically injured in single-vehicle crash in L.A.

An approximately 2-year-old child is in critical condition after what appears to be a single-vehicle crash in Lakewood on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Del Amo Boulevard, east of Knoxville Avenue, officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to KTLA. Details remain limited, and it’s unclear how exactly the crash occurred, but preliminary information suggests the driver of a light-colored four-door sedan crashed into a power pole on Del Amo Boulevard. The vehicle was carrying at least five people, including two children. Bystanders reportedly helped deputies shatter the vehicle’s rear windows so first responders with the Los Angeles County Fire Department could reach victims trapped in the back seat. The child was rushed by ambulance to a hospital in critical condition. Four other passengers were also transported to a hospital with conditions that have not been disclosed. Footage from the scene obtained by KTLA shows heavy damage to the vehicle’s hood, with an apparent impact strong enough to deploy the airbags. A large number of first responders were at the scene, examining the vehicle and crash site. It is unknown if speed and or alcohol or drug may have been a factor in the crash. KTLA has reached out to Los Angeles County fire officials and sheriff’s investigators for additional details and is awaiting a response.
