Auburn man dies two weeks after fatal crash on U.S. 280, ALEA says
ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. (WRBL) — An Auburn man has died two weeks after a fatal two-vehicle crash that happened on U.S. 280 roughly two miles southeast of Camp Hill in Tallapoosa County. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), on Tuesday, June 30, the Auburn man, identified as Hugh W. Smith, 82, was fatally injured when the Toyota Tacoma he was driving was struck by a Lexus IS 250, driven by Cheaney M. Keel, 23, of Alexander City. RELATED: Opelika man killed, Auburn man injured in fatal single-vehicle crash, ALEA says ALEA says Smith's vehicle then left the roadway and struck a tree due to the initial impact of the collision. Smith was then taken to the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and was later transferred to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery. According to ALEA, Smith succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, July 14, and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Wanda A. Smith, 79, of Auburn, was riding passenger in the vehicle with Smith and was also injured and taken to the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika for treatment, ALEA says. Keel, the driver who struck Smith, was also injured and taken to the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika for medical treatment. There are no further details available at this time. Troopers with ALEA's Highway Patrol Division are currently leading the investigation.
