At least one killed in solo-vehicle crash on Highway 58, sparks fire on hillside

According to CalFire , the fire has burned 300 acres. ------------- At least one person is dead after a crash on Highway 58 near General Beale Road Friday afternoon. The crash ignited a fire with smoke visible for miles. The California Highway Patrol said on Friday, June 19, 2026, at around 4:30 p.m., there was a report of a solo-vehicle crash on westbound Highway 58, east of General Beale Road. The CHP’s website said the vehicle went down the mountain and landed on the roadway. The CHP's website said it was reported that the vehicle was traveling at high speeds, in and out of lanes, and lost control. According to the website, a person, identified as a male, was ejected. The coroner’s office was later called. The website also said the vehicle and the hillside were on fire. The CHP's website said flames were about 20 feet high with a westbound lane closed. A plume of smoke can be seen on the AlertCalifornia and Caltrans cameras. This is a developing story.
