At least 5 dead after crash involving bus, 6 vehicles on I-95 in Stafford County: VSP

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) -- At least five people have died, and dozens were hospitalized on Friday morning after a bus crashed on Interstate 95 in Stafford County. The crash, which involved a charter bus and six vehicles, happened near mile marker 146, just two miles away from Exit 148 (Quantico) on May 29. Virginia State Police said their preliminary investigation indicated that around 2:35 a.m., traffic was slowing down on the highway for an upcoming work zone. Officials said the bus "failed to slow" for traffic and crashed into six vehicles. The crash remains under investigation; however, police noted that charges are pending. As of Friday morning, all southbound lanes on I-95 South were closed, and traffic was being diverted onto Route 1. A traffic camera in the area showed the bus in the median and several first responders on the scene. Delays were extended for more than four miles, and traffic sat at a standstill. Drivers seeking alternative routes are urged to use other north-south routes in the area and to avoid Route 301 or Route 29. VDOT is warning drivers that major delays will continue along I-95 and Route 1 during the morning rush. Congestion is also expected near the Route 1 and Route 610 intersection. Throughout the morning, the heavy delays backed up to Exit 152 in Prince William County. Officials noted that a separate crash is also impacting traffic on I-95 North, and delays began near Exit 140 (Courthouse Road).
