Amherst soldier dies in training accident in California

FORT STEWART, Ga. (WSAV) — A 3rd Infantry Division Soldier from Amherst who was stationed at Fort Stewart was killed during a training exercise at Fort Irwin, California, on Wednesday, a 3rd Infantry Division spokesperson said. Spc. Adrian Bonsey, 29, was struck and killed by an M2 Bradley at approximately 4:30 a.m. Bonsey was performing his duties in the training area during hours of limited visibility, the spokesperson said. “The Amherst Central School District is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Adrian Bonsey, a 2015 graduate of Amherst Central High School," Amherst Central School District Superintendent Anthony J. Panella said in a statement. "On behalf of the entire school community, we offer our deepest condolences to his family during this incredibly difficult time. We hold immense pride in his choice to serve our nation.” Bonsey was a combat engineer with the 9th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. He joined the Army in 2023 and was stationed at Fort Stewart for two months. He previously served at Fort Carson, Colorado and deployed to Poland in 2024. He was awarded two Army Achievement Medals. “This is a devastating loss for our entire division," said Maj. Gen. John Lubas, the 3rd IDcommanding general. "Adrian was an exceptional Soldier who was committed to our mission and proudly serving our Nation. We are heartbroken and will wrap our arms around his family, loved ones and fellow Soldiers during this difficult time." The incident is under investigation.
