Alcohol suspected in deadly Hwy. 99 tree crash in Sacramento, CHP says

(FOX40.COM) — One person was killed and another seriously injured in an early Monday morning solo vehicle crash on Highway 99 in South Sacramento, according to the California Highway Patrol. • Video above: What to do if you witness a crash According to CHP, the crash was reported around 3:59 a.m. near the Mingo Road off-ramp. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a red Hyundai Santa Fe with major damage after it crashed into a tree. CHP said in a press release that the vehicle was traveling northbound on Highway 99 at an unknown speed when it left the roadway to the right, traveled through a dirt and grass median, crossed the Mingo Road on-ramp and struck a tree. Firefighters and paramedics arrived to find a passenger injured and worked to extricate the driver from the vehicle, CHP said. Both were transported to Kaiser South Sacramento Medical Center. At 4:20 a.m., CHP said the passenger was pronounced dead and the driver sustained major injuries and remains hospitalized. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, according to CHP. The identities of the driver and passenger have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
