Three killed in separate crashes across Santa Clara County

(KRON)-- It was a deadly weekend on Santa Clara County roads. Three people were killed in three separate crashes within 24 hours, according to the California Highway Patrol. Two of those crashes involved motorcyclists. The first crash happened just after 5 p.m. Saturday on Highway 101 near the Sargent overcrossing, about 5 miles south of Gilroy. According to CHP, a 45-year-old Watsonville woman was riding a Honda motorcycle when she crashed. Officers said she suffered serious injuries and later died at the scene. The cause of the crash is still being investigated. Less than 24 hours later, CHP responded to a second deadly motorcycle crash. Just before 2:45 p.m. Sunday, a 34-year-old San Jose man was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle when CHP said he crashed into a pickup truck towing a trailer. The crash happened on Highway 152 near Ferguson Road in Gilroy. The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and died despite lifesaving efforts, CHP said. The cause of that crash also remains under investigation. Less than two hours later, officers responded to a third deadly crash near Gilroy. It happened just after 4:30 p.m. on Bolsa Road, north of Bloomfield Road in Santa Clara County. According to CHP, a Ford F-150 crashed head-on into a Toyota pickup. Officers found the Toyota's driver unresponsive. The 56-year-old man from Aptos later died despite lifesaving efforts. CHP said the driver of the Ford attempted to flee the scene on foot before collapsing. That driver was arrested on suspicion of fleeing the scene of a crash. In each of the three crashes, CHP said the exact cause remains under investigation. "Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased," CHP said, urging drivers and motorcyclists to obey traffic laws, drive defensively and prioritize safety on the road.
