35 crashes in 2 years, including 1 other fatal, for trucking company in deadly I-70 crash

A deadly crash on Interstate 70 is raising new questions about the trucking company involved after Columbus police said a tire came off a tractor-trailer, crossed the concrete median and struck three cars. Police said the rear tire came off the tractor-trailer near Miller Avenue on Friday afternoon, went into the eastbound lanes and hit three vehicles. The driver of a Taurus tried to avoid the tire, but struck the concrete median and died. Police have not identified the victim. Federal records show Schneider National Bulk Carriers Inc., the company involved in the crash, has been involved in 35 crashes over the last two years, including one other fatal crash. The company is based in Wisconsin and has more than 500 vehicles and 600 drivers. Violations have been found in 232 inspections of its fleet in the last two years, with tires, brakes and lighting listed as the main maintenance problems. An inspection in Ohio two months ago found tires on a company vehicle leaking or inflated below 50%. Schneider National Bulk Carriers Inc. sent a statement to ABC6 On Your Side on Wednesday about the deadly weekend crash: We were saddened to learn of this tragic accident. We are waiting to learn the facts around this before making any judgments or conclusions. Given that this is an active investigation, we’ll have no further comment, and any questions about the accident should be directed to the investigating authorities. Police have not said whether any charges have been filed.
