2 injured in crash that sent vehicle into Mass. coffee shop

Two people were injured Tuesday in a multi-vehicle crash that sent an SUV into a coffee shop in Malden, Massachusetts.The crash happened around noon on Charles Street. According to Malden police, westbound traffic was stopped at a red light when one vehicle rear-ended another. Police said the striking vehicle then shifted into reverse and backed into the New England Coffee Shop.Sky5 footage showed a heavily damaged black sedan in the middle of the road and a damaged gray SUV in the nearby coffee shop parking lot.Emergency crews used the Jaws of Life to rescue one person trapped inside a vehicle involved in the crash. That person and another individual were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.Surveillance video captured the moment the vehicle crashed into the coffee shop. A witness said nearly a dozen people were inside at the time, but no customers or employees were injured.Andres Corea, a witness who helped the driver who crashed into the shop, described the aftermath."When the policeman came out and opened the door, it was an older person," Corea said. "Right away, they took him out and put him on the bench. He was bleeding. I put on my gloves and covered him with a rag."Corea said the driver appeared disoriented after the crash."He said, 'My phone doesn’t work, my TV doesn’t work,'" Corea said. "I guess he was confused."The crash remains under investigation.
