17-year-old killed in I-80 crash identified
(KRON)-- A 17-year-old boy who was killed in an I-80 crash near SoMa on May 30 has been identified as Lenin Homer Silva by the San Francisco Medical Examiner. The crash occurred on the morning of May 30 around 1:30 a.m. between a tractor-trailer, a Recology truck semi, and a grey Chevrolet Camaro, according to CHP officials. Police said the Camaro was traveling eastbound just west of 7th Street when it made an illegal lane change to the right, colliding with the tractor-trailer as it was approaching the off-ramp. After hitting the sand barrels at the top of the exit ramp, the Camaro launched over the off-ramp bridge railing, where it dropped 25 feet and landed in the San Francisco Police Department Impound parking lot beneath the off-ramp upside down on top of another car. Police said four people were inside the Camaro. The driver, an 18-year-old man, had moderate injuries and managed to get himself out of the car, police said. The right front passenger, a 17-year-old male, suffered moderate injuries as well. Homer Silva was one of the two passengers in the back of the car and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The other passenger, a 17-year-old male, was taken to a local hospital. Homer Silva lived in San Francisco and was a student at Hillsdale High School. In a social media post, Hillsdale High School sent out a statement that said in part: "There are no words that can fully capture the grief and shock of losing a member of our Hillsdale family, especially so soon after graduation. We are deeply saddened by this loss and will carry Lenin's memory in our hearts.... To our students. You are loved, you are valued, and you are part of a community that cares deeply about you. Please lean on your friends, your families, your teachers, and your coaches." Homer Silva was also a goalkeeper at Golden Glove Academy, a private goalkeeper training academy. He dreamed of becoming a Division 1 soccer player and was currently in the college recruiting process, according to Golden Glove Academy In a social media post, the Academy announced it will be running a fundraiser, selling "limited edition Kona Pure Memorial Gloves featuring Lenin's initials and a dove symbol on the wrist strap." They plan to donate $6 from each purchase toward Lenin's memorial. A memorial for Homer Silva will be hosted at Hummingbird Farm in San Francisco on June 8.
