14-year-old charged with murder after high-speed chase, crash in Ogden that killed two children
OGDEN, Utah (ABC4) — A 14-year-old has been charged with six felonies, including murder, in connection with the fatal crash following a high-speed chase that killed two children in Ogden on March 27. At around 7:45 p.m., police found a stolen vehicle in the 2800 block of Quincey Avenue. The driver, identified as a 14-year-old boy, fled the scene, struck one police vehicle, and crashed into a vehicle in the intersection of 31st Street and Grant Avenue. An 11-year-old boy was declared dead on the scene, and a 7-year-old boy later died as a result of his injuries. There was also a passenger in the stolen vehicle, also identified as a 14-year-old boy, and the passenger and the driver were also injured in the crash, requiring hospitalization. According to the Weber County Attorney's Office, charges were filed against the 14-year-old, who has not been publicly identified. The teen was charged with two counts of murder, one count of aggravated assault with serious bodily injury, one count of theft by receiving stolen property, and failure to respond to an officer's signal to stop. Additionally, the juvenile was charged with two misdemeanors, reckless endangerment and accident involving property damage with knowledge of accident. The charges were filed in the Juvenile Court, and the statement of probable cause alleges that while the juvenile was driving a stolen vehicle, law enforcement activated their emergency lights. The juvenile fled and struck a police car, and then he led police on a short pursuit and collided with another vehicle that was traveling through an intersection. The crash caused fatal injuries to two children and serious injuries to additional occupants. The vehicle was reportedly occupied by two adults and six children at the time of the collision. There will be an initial appearance in Juvenile Court, but a date has not been set yet. The State is also intending to seek continued detention for the juvenile while waiting for court proceedings. "Our thoughts are with the family and community members impacted by this tragedy," Christopher Allred, Weber County Attorney, said. "We will pursue this case in court and remain committed to a fair and just process for all involved. We ask the public to refrain from speculation and respect the privacy of the victims." The victims' family has set up a GoFundMe to help pay for medical costs, where they said that they are recovering from serious injuries, and some have undergone surgeries.
