Youngstown woman indicted for fatal crash in July in Beaver Township

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) -- A Youngstown woman was indicted Thursday by a Mahoning County grand jury for her role in a fatal crash in July in Beaver Township. Sally Strom, 61, was indicted on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, a second-degree felony, and two counts of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, a first-degree misdemeanor. Troopers with the Canfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Strom was the driver of a van that was traveling north on state Route 7 in Beaver about 4:35 p.m. July 11 when the van went left of center and collided with an SUV driven by Clinton Vankirk, 49, of Poland. Troopers said Vankirk's SUV was struck in the side. Both vehicles continued off the west side of the road and overturned. Vankirk was pronounced dead at the scene. Strom was taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. While the original press release on the crash stated drugs and alcohol did not appear to be a factor, Strom was indicted on OVI charges. An updated accident report said that toxicology tests completed Nov. 10 showed cannabinoids in her system at the time of the crash. Strom was indicted via direct presentment. It is unclear when she will be arraigned.
