Young Hilo driver dies in fatal single-vehicle crash
Hilo, Hawaii—A tragic single-vehicle crash resulted in the loss of a 20-year-old man from Hilo on Sunday afternoon. According to the Hawaii Police Department, the incident occurred around 2:07 p.m. along Mahiai Street near Ahuna Road. The driver, identified as Logan Quintal, was driving a white 2017 Jeep Renegade east when he lost control of the vehicle. Despite efforts by emergency services at the scene, Quintal was unresponsive and pronounced dead at 2:20 p.m. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death. Police do not suspect that speed, alcohol, or drugs played a role in the crash. Those with information are urged to reach out to Traffic Enforcement Unit Officer Jerome Duarte. This incident marks the first traffic fatality on Hawaii Island in 2026, compared to two deaths at the same time last year. Statewide, this marks the fifth traffic fatality of the year, contrasting with seven fatalities in 2025.
