Young girl killed after ATV rolls, catches fire in Iron County

PAROWAN, Utah (ABC4) — A young girl died after an ATV rolled and caught fire in Parowan on Friday, according to the Iron County Sheriff's Office. At around 6:50 p.m. on June 12, emergency personnel responded to a reported fire near Valentine Peak Sports Complex at the Iron County Fairgrounds in Parowan. Upon arrival, first responders found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Responders initially believed the vehicle was a truck due to the extent of the fire, according to the sheriff's office. The vehicle was later determined to be a side-by-side. The investigation shows that two girls, ages 12 and 13, were riding the vehicle together near an area where the road makes an angled turn. Investigators believe they turned too wide, causing the side-by-side to roll over. The vehicle caught fire during the crash. One of the girls was able to escape while the other was trapped inside and pronounced deceased on scene. "This incident is a heartbreaking tragedy that has impacted the community and will continue to affect those involved," a press release from the sheriff's office states. "At this time, the primary focus remains on supporting the individuals and families affected, completing the necessary notifications, and conducting a thorough investigation. Out of respect for the family and those involved, no additional information will be released at this time." The Iron County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into this incident. No further information is currently available.
