Woman sentenced to 10 years in jail after fatal 2024 crash in Rocky Hill
ROCKY HILL, Conn. (WTNH) -- A woman was sentenced to 10 years in jail after a fatal 2024 crash on Interstate 91 in Rocky Hill, according to court documents. Mackenzie Simpson, 21, of East Hartford, was sentenced to 10 years in jail, suspended after one year and three years probation. Simpson was charged with second-degree manslaughter on May 12, 2025, after turning herself in to police custody. The sentencing stems from March 30, 2024, when Simpson was allegedly speeding southbound on I-91 with four people in an Acura, according to police. Authorities believed she was involved in racing activities with a 25-year-old man from East Hartford, who was later identified as D’Andre Charles. Police said Charles was driving behind a tractor-trailer and tried to maneuver around the truck where Simpson was traveling, causing the vehicles to collide. As a result, Simpson's vehicle ran off the road to the shoulder, and Charles' car hit the median rail and rolled over. Charles was ejected from the vehicle and died, police said. According to police, they allegedly reached speeds exceeding 120 miles per hour.
