Woman may face charges after 19-month-old dies in I-96 wreck
Michigan State Police are investigating a deadly single-vehicle crash on the west side of the state, in Kent County. Troopers from the Grand Rapids Post were called Tuesday, April 28, to westbound I-96 near Alden Nash Road in Lowell Township. According to investigators, a 2017 Dodge Ram driven by a 41-year-old woman from Lansing was headed west at a high speed and driving erratically before the crash. Police say the vehicle crossed from the median side of the freeway to the shoulder, then went off the road and crashed into a group of trees. When troopers arrived on the scene, they found a 19-month-old girl with critical injuries. First responders performed CPR before she was taken to a local hospital, where she later died. The driver was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries and is expected to recover. Authorities say alcohol or drugs may have played a role. The investigation is ongoing as they await toxicology results, and charges are possible. The freeway was shut down for about 90 minutes while crews investigated and reconstructed the crash.
