Woman granted second parole in fatal East Palo Alto DUI accident
Leylani Simmons, who was involved in a fatal car crash while driving under the influence, has been granted parole for a second time after a hearing at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla. Simmons, now 40, was arrested for second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter, and felony evading after the 2011 accident that took the life of her passenger. Governor Gavin Newsom reversed an earlier decision to grant parole due to Simmons' misconduct in prison, but acknowledged her efforts to improve herself, such as earning educational degrees and participating in substance abuse programs. Despite positive steps, including disassociating from gang activity and maintaining sobriety, Simmons will have her case reviewed by the governor's office once more.
