Woman accused in fatal Wichita DUI crash deemed competent for trial

Editor's note: The above video is from an April 14 story. WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The woman accused of driving under the influence when she crashed into an SUV, killing a Wichita mother and daughter, has been found competent to stand trial. Clowie McLaughlin was in Sedgwick County District Court on Thursday morning, where a judge ruled that she is mentally competent for trial. She then pleaded not guilty. McLaughlin is charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter while under the influence in the deaths of LaShea Bell and her daughter, A’Niah Bell. The crash happened Aug. 30 near Central Avenue and Webb Road. Court documents allege that McLaughlin had been drinking alcohol at an east Wichita restaurant before the crash and had trouble maintaining her balance, based on security footage. In April, McLaughlin's lawyer successfully argued that she should be evaluated to determine if she was competent to be tried. The evaluation was conducted by COMCARE. The trial is scheduled to begin Aug. 24.
