Witnesses say crash on I-95 led to fights on the highway
Witnesses claim a massive pileup on Interstate 95 South in Pawtucket early Sunday morning ended in fights on the highway and drivers exiting their vehicles to scream at each other. The situation began shortly after 5 a.m. near the Broadway bridge over I-95, when Rhode Island State Police said an initial multi-vehicle crash resulted in two more crashes shortly after. As traffic began to back up, witness John Gomes said he saw a surprising amount of people getting out of their cars, walking around, and even partying. "Partying in the middle of the highway, going nuts and stuff," Gomes said. "I'm like, 'What’s going on here?' It’s an accident but people are acting crazy all over the highway." Shortly after, he claims tempers flared up and several fights broke out among the crowd. Rhode Island State Police are investigating 'numerous' reports of people fighting on the highway. At least nine people involved in the crashes were sent to the hospital, but none of their injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
