Winston-Salem police investigate fatal pedestrian crash on US-52 under Liberty Street Bridge

A pedestrian was killed early Wednesday when a vehicle struck them on northbound U.S. 52 in Winston-Salem, prompting an ongoing investigation and the closure of part of the highway. Winston-Salem police officers were called to a crash involving a pedestrian at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2026, on U.S. 52 northbound under the Liberty Street Bridge. Police said they found a 2010 Honda that had been involved in an apparent collision with a pedestrian. The driver, Jose Isabel Troncoso-Ortiz, was not injured, police said. The pedestrian, whose identity was still pending, was found dead in the roadway from injuries received during the crash. Preliminary findings indicate the Honda was traveling northbound on U.S. 52 when the pedestrian, for reasons still unknown, was in the travel lanes. Police said the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and the roadway was dark when the vehicle struck them. Police said Troncoso-Ortiz remained on scene and was cooperative with the investigation. The Winston-Salem Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit responded and assumed investigative responsibility. Police said a next of kin for the pedestrian had not been notified and positive identification was pending. Anyone with information is asked to call the Winston-Salem Police Department non-emergency number at 336-773-7700.
