Willoughby Hills officer dies in off-duty accident: ‘A lasting impact’
WILLOUGHBY HILLS, Ohio (WJW) - The Willoughby Hills Police Department is mourning the loss of Officer Ryan Shannon. Willoughby Hills Police Chief Matthew Naegele confirmed to FOX 8 News Friday night that Shannon died in an off-duty accident. "Out of respect for his family and loved ones, we will not be sharing additional details at this time," Naegele said in a statement. The police chief asked the community to keep loved ones and the department in their thoughts and prayers. "We are deeply grateful for his dedicated service to the City of Willoughby Hills and greater Lake County community and for the commitment, professionalism and compassion he brought to this profession each day," the statement continued. "His service made a lasting impact, and he will be remembered with honor and respect." Shannon joined the Willoughby Hills Police Department in December 2025. He previously served the Perry Village Police Department. Perry Village Police took to social media Friday night, extending condolences to the family. "He was a valued member of our department, a dedicated officer and a dear friend to many," the post said. "His loss will be deeply felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him."
