Wichita man gets probation for leaving scene of fatal crash

Editor's note: This article and headline have been updated to correct Hughes' sentence. We regret the error. WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A Wichita man was sentenced to three years of probation after leaving the scene of a fatal crash. A Sedgwick County judge handed down Blaine Hughes' sentence on Thursday. He was sentenced to 36 months of probation with an underlying prison sentence of 43 months if he violates the terms of his probation. Hughes had pleaded guilty to one count of leaving the scene of an accident. The crash happened in September 2025. According to the affidavit, Hughes was driving a pickup when he hit Daniel Forshey, who was bicycling across the intersection of Broadway and Murdock avenues. Based on witness statements and camera footage described in the affidavit, Hughes got out, walked over to Forshey, then got back in his truck and drove off. Forshey was declared dead by law enforcement at the scene. Hughes' truck was found parked at a McDonald's a few hours later. Hughes was working a shift at the restaurant when police took him into custody. He told them he left the scene because he was worried he would be fired if he was late.
