18-year-old dies in crash near Hermosa

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) - An 18-year-old man died in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday near Hermosa, SD. The South Dakota Department of Public Safety says the driver of a Toyota Camry was traveling westbound on SD Highway 40 near Hermosa when he entered the eastbound lane. At the same time, the driver of a Ford Explorer approached the Camry from the eastbound lanes and tried to avoid a collision. The vehicles struck each other. The driver of the Camry, an 18-year-old Rapid City man, sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the Explorer, a 34-year-old woman, was life-flighted to a Rapid City hospital. Her passengers, a 35-year-old Hermosa woman and two 7-year-olds, sustained minor injuries. Both drivers were wearing seat belts. The names of those involved have not been released pending the notification of family members. SD Highway 40 was closed for an hour after the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
