While fleeing police, driver crashes over median into pickup truck near Carlisle Pike

A driver was fleeing police when they went over the median and crashed into pickup truck waiting to get onto the Carlisle Pike Monday afternoon, according to police. Around 1:30 p.m., the Hampden Township Volunteer Fire Department said I-581 exit ramps to Carlisle Pike were closed in both directions as crews responded. The Hampden Township Police Department said had officers tried to pull over a suspended driver around 12:30 p.m. near 61 Gateway Drive. When officers spoke to the driver, they noticed a "strong odor" of marijuana and asked the driver to step out of the vehicle. Police said that's when the driver rolled up their window and drove away. A short distance later, the vehicle crossed over the median onto the on-ramp of Rt. 581 at Carlisle Pike. In doing so, the vehicle crashed into a pick-up truck that had been waiting to drive onto Carlisle Pike. Police said the fleeing driver then tried to run away, but they were taken into custody shortly after. Both the fleeing driver and pickup driver were treated for minor injuries. Officers said they recovered marijuana from the scene, and they are waiting on a warrant to search the vehicle. There is no longer a threat to the public.
