What was the cause of the plane crash at LaGuardia?
QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A pilot and a copilot were killed after an Air Canada regional jet struck a fire truck on a runway while landing at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, officials said. The pilot and copilot were killed in the late Sunday night collision, which crushed the nose of the aircraft, while around 40 passengers and crew members were taken to area hospitals, some with serious injuries. Investigations are ongoing, but radio transmissions just before the crash indicate that a vehicle was cleared to cross part of the tarmac. The air traffic controller then frantically tried to stop the truck, repeating many times, "Stop, Truck 1. Stop!" The controller can then be heard trying to divert an incoming aircraft from landing. The fire truck was traveling across the runway to respond to a separate incident aboard a United Airlines flight, whose pilot had reported “an issue with odor,” said Kathryn Garcia, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport. Gov. Kathy Hochul released the following statement on X: "Heartbreaking news out of LaGuardia this morning. Two pilots were killed and dozens injured in this tragedy. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected. The airport will remain closed until 2 p.m. We’ll continue to share updates as they become available."
