West Virginia State Police search for suspect who fled from law enforcement and caused accident on I-77
PAX, WV (WVNS) -- The West Virginia State Police are looking for a suspect who reportedly fled from police after an attempted traffic stop and caused an accident on I-77 Southbound. According to a press release from the West Virginia State Police, West Virginia State Police Turnpike members tried to hold a traffic stop of a car on I-77 Southbound around mile marker 56 due to traffic violations at around 3:13 p.m. on Thursday, February 26, 2026. The press release stated that the driver drove away on I-77 Southbound after failing to yield, and was involved in a car accident around mile marker 51. The suspect allegedly ran toward Maple Fork Road in Raleigh County after leaving the scene. According to the press release, members of law enforcement discovered that the suspect could have gotten a ride from an unknown person and was dropped off in the Mount Hope area of Fayette County before running again. The press release stated that the investigation is still ongoing and the suspect was not identified or arrested at this time. The West Virginia State Police also stated that no injuries were reported due to the incident. According to the press release, anyone with information about the incident is advised to call the West Virginia State Police Turnpike at 304-256-6786.
