Video shows cyclist ran stop sign before deadly Chico crash, police say

Police have identified the bicyclist killed in a crash Thursday at Cohasset Road and Ryan Avenue and said video from a nearby business helped investigators determine what happened. Michael Goudy, 78, was riding east on Ryan Avenue toward Cohasset Road when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign, according to the Chico Police Department. Police said surveillance video showed Goudy continued into the intersection and into the path of southbound traffic. Investigators said it appeared Goudy did not see the approaching vehicle and rode into the right front side of it. Police said the evidence showed the vehicle did not hit Goudy first. Instead, investigators determined Goudy collided with the side of the vehicle. Goudy was wearing cycling gloves, a bicycle helmet and a reflective safety vest at the time of the crash, police said. The Chico Police Department’s Major Accident Investigations Team investigated the crash. Officers concluded the driver, a Chico resident, had a valid driver’s license, was driving in their lane at or near the posted speed limit and did not commit any violation or take any action that caused or contributed to the crash. -- Report a correction or typo.
