Video captures consecutive accidents during flooding on 101 Freeway in Ventura County

KTLA cameras recorded consecutive crashes on the flooded southbound 101 Freeway in Ventura County on Friday morning due to stormy conditions causing drivers to skid on water-covered lanes. KTLA's Erin Myers observed the chain of accidents live from an overpass near California Street, where portions of the freeway were submerged in standing water. Video footage displayed vehicles spinning out, hitting barriers, and getting stuck while traffic navigated through the flooded sections. Multiple vehicles were stranded in the water, with other drivers narrowly avoiding collisions. California Highway Patrol officers arrived at the scene as the treacherous conditions persisted. Authorities are advising motorists to reduce speed and steer clear of flooded roads, cautioning that even minimal water can lead to vehicles skidding or sliding. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for northwest Ventura County, encompassing Matilija Canyon, Maricopa Highway, and Highway 154. Ventura County officials reported another bout of rainfall on Christmas Day, with more anticipated on Friday as the unsettled weather persists. Rainfall estimates over the next two days range from 1 to 2.5 inches in coastal and valley regions, while hills and mountains may receive 2.5 to 5 inches. Due to cumulative rain, rivers and creeks are forecast to maintain elevated levels through the weekend, although they are expected to stay below flood thresholds. An evacuation directive was in place for the Ventura Beach RV Resort because of the flood risk from the Ventura River. Additionally, evacuation advisories are still active for Matilija Canyon, North Fork, and the Camino Cielo area due to road debris and increased Matilija Creek flows. Earlier evacuation advisories for the Mountain Fire scar in Camarillo and the Camp Chaffee/Foster Park region have expired, but residents are urged to stay alert and prepared for deteriorating conditions. Heavy rain, debris, and standing water may hinder travel across Ventura County, managed by various county, state, and city entities. Drivers should verify conditions prior to travel and avoid flooded streets or highways. Self-serve sandbags are accessible at numerous Ventura County fire stations, and residents are urged to stay informed with official alerts during ongoing storms.
