Vehicle Fire on I-44 Ends Without Injuries; Firefighters Also Assist Person in Crisis
The Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District was dispatched late Saturday night after receiving an Apple Automatic Crash Notification near mile marker 173 on I-44. Moments later, the call was upgraded to a motor vehicle crash involving a fire and a possible rescue. According to the fire district, a passenger vehicle collided with a semi-truck, causing the passenger vehicle to catch fire. Despite the severity of the crash and resulting fire, officials reported that no injuries were sustained. As firefighters wrapped up operations and prepared to return their equipment to service, crews were approached by an individual who appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis. Firefighters remained with the person, providing support and ensuring their safety until law enforcement officers arrived to assist.
