Several injured after wrong-way driver crashes into another car on I-290
A woman died and another woman was injured Wednesday night in a fiery wrong-way crash on Interstate 290 in Northborough, Massachusetts, officials said. Multiple 911 callers reported just before 9 p.m. that a car was driving the wrong way on I-290 eastbound. When state troopers arrived, they found the wrong-way car had crashed into another near exit 27. A Subaru and a Jeep were found on fire with severe front-end damage, fire officials said.Viewer video sent to NewsCenter 5 showed a vehicle on its side, completely engulfed in flames. The other vehicle was nearby, also on fire and emitting heavy smoke. The diver and sole occupant of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene. The diver and sole occupant of the other vehicle escaped before first responders arrived and was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Officials did not identify which driver was traveling the wrong way. The crash remains under investigation.It was the latest in a string of wrong-way crashes across the state.Massachusetts State Trooper Kevin Trainor was killed last month in the line of duty while stopping a wrong-way driver in Lynnfield.In response, state leaders announced an expansion of wrong-way detection technology. They're rolling out 400 wrong-way prevention systems statewide. Thermal cameras can detect vehicles traveling the wrong direction, activate flashing warning signs and immediately alert authorities.MassDOT is also upgrading pavement markings, ramp designs and signage. One of the new signs was installed overnight in Braintree. Workers said it was the third installation under the new program.
